Sustainable fabrics in sportswear

Tecidos sustentáveis na roupa desportiva

Your workout clothes accompany deep breaths, slow stretches, intense classes, and moments of rest. Therefore, choosing sustainable fabrics in sportswear is not just an aesthetic decision: it's a way to align what you wear with the intention behind your movement. But sustainable doesn't automatically mean perfect. It means choosing with more information, valuing durability, and looking for pieces that make sense for your body, your practice, and the planet.

In yoga, Pilates, or functional training, comfort is non-negotiable. We want leggings that adapt to every pose, tops that offer support without constricting, and fabrics that make us feel light. The good news is that performance and consciousness can coexist, as long as you know how to look beyond pretty words on the label.

What makes a fabric more sustainable?

A fabric is considered more sustainable when it seeks to reduce impacts throughout its life cycle: from the origin of the raw material and water consumption to dyeing processes, garment durability, and end-of-life. There isn't a flawless fiber in every context. Instead, there are more balanced and transparent choices.

In sportswear, this conversation is especially relevant. Technical pieces need elasticity, resistance, moisture management, and shape retention. For this reason, many combine different fibers. A legging with a mixed composition can be extraordinarily functional, even if it is more difficult to recycle at the end of its useful life. It's a real compromise, and it deserves to be acknowledged without excessive promises.

The most conscious starting point is simple: choose less, choose better, and use for longer. A piece that maintains comfort, elasticity, and shape after many uses can have a lower impact than several impulsive purchases, even when these seem more ecological at first glance.

Sustainable fabrics for sportswear: the most common

Recycled polyester: performance with a second life

Recycled polyester is one of the most common options in technical clothing. It can be produced from plastic waste, such as PET bottles, or industrial waste, reducing the need to use virgin raw material. It is lightweight, resistant, and quick-drying, characteristics very useful for more dynamic workouts or when you need to pack clothes for the rest of the day.

However, there's an important detail: as a synthetic fiber, it can release microfibers during washing. Washing in cold water, choosing delicate cycles, and avoiding unnecessary washes helps care for the garment and reduce this impact. For those looking for support, opacity, and a more technical feel, it remains a very practical option.

Recycled polyamide: softness and resistance

Recycled polyamide is valued for its soft feel, elasticity, and resistance to wear. It often appears in leggings and yoga sets with a silky finish, designed to adapt to the body without restricting movement. When sourced from recovered fishing nets or industrial waste, it allows for new uses for materials that could otherwise become waste.

It's a particularly interesting fiber for low to medium intensity practices, where the feel on the skin is as important as support. As with recycled polyester, it is still synthetic. Its advantage lies in combining high durability with less dependence on virgin resources.

Organic cotton: natural comfort for softer rhythms

Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides and conventional chemical fertilizers, following specific production standards. It is breathable, soft, and very comfortable for stretching, meditation, light walks, or for wearing before and after practice.

For very sweaty workouts, it might not be the most functional choice: it absorbs moisture and takes longer to dry than a technical fiber. This is where intention must meet reality. An organic cotton t-shirt might be perfect for a restorative class, but perhaps not the best companion for a high-intensity workout.
